2019 Bookish Goals & TBR Challenge

Let’s get this year started!!! I am so excited to start off my new bookish resolutions. I have always been the type of person to create New Year’s Resolutions because it gives a very clear beginning and end date to goals so that you can measure how you are doing in terms of accomplishing them.

As you may have read in my 2018 Wrap-Up, I did not have the greatest reading year last year. I plan to rectify this in the upcoming year by reading at least one book per week for a total of 52 books in the year.

I would also like to read more diversely from new genres to more diversity in characters and authors. I have a lot of books that have been on my TBR (To-Be-Read list) for years (some of which I have had since 2009…) and a lot that I own that I have never picked up. I have a habit of picking up new books to read at the library because I don’t like creasing or ruining how my books look. 2019 is the year I will get over that fear.

In order to accomplish my goals of reading 52 books for the year and reading more diversely, I will plan my TBR to help accomplish this. I will plan to read 5 books per month. If I don’t get to the 5th book it will get pushed to the next month. The 5 books per month will be broken down by category as follows:

  1. One TBR veteran
    1. Any book added to my GoodReads TBR shelf before 2017
  2. One new release
    1. Any book published in the last 6 months
  3. One book I own already
    1. Any book that is unread on my shelves (about 90% of my shelf haha)
  4. One *special topic* book
    1. See below for special topics
  5. One random book
    1. Any book that I feel like reading in that month

As you can see above, I want to choose a special topic book for each month. The topics I have assigned for each month are as follows:

  • January: One non-fiction
  • February: One own-voices African American History book (in support of Black History Month)
  • March: One feminist book (in support of Women’s History Month)
  • April: One classic novel
  • May: One own-voices book about mental health (In support of Mental Health Month)
  • June: One own-voices book about an LGBT character (In support of Pride Month)
  • July: One summer themed book
  • August: One classic novel
  • September: One own-voices book about Hispanic heritage (In support of Hispanic Heritage Month)
  • October: One spooky/horror novel
  • November: One classic novel
  • December: One Christmas-themed book

I additionally would like to note that for May I will choose an own-voices book for my random book about Asian/Pacific Heritage to further support of Asian/Pacific Heritage Month. I will also have the additional challenge of completing the Pop-Sugar Challenge so I will have to try my best to find books each month that fit this challenge. I will be making a post about the challenge in the next week so you can see some ideas I have for the challenge books.

Let me know if you all have any special bookish goals for 2019. How many books do you want to read? We can accomplish our goals together this year! Now off to start my reading 🙂
